Nyatsime College seeks to raise funds for a driving school

Nyatsime College is set to organise a golf day to raise funds to build an office and conference room as well as staff accommodation at the college’s driving school along Seke Road in Chitungwiza.

The golf event is scheduled to take place at the Zimbabwe Republic Police Golf Club in Harare on August 3, 2024.

Nyatsime College’s vision for a driving school began in 2015 and has been in its strategic plan ever since.

The college has a booth located at Seke Township, now Makoni Shopping Center, and as such, a certified driving school instructor and graduate of the college was recruited for this purpose and is part of the teaching staff.

“The carnage on the road is real. We are raising funds to build an office and conference room at the Nyatsime College Driving School along Seke Road in Chitungwiza. Please help us bring sanity to the roads by supporting this noble cause and realising the dream of its founder, the late Professor Stanlake Samkange, to see Nyatsime College offer technical and vocational as well as trade education, which was not provided in African schools, to equip African children with life skills,” said tournament coordinator Evelyn Maisvoreva, who is also a member of the college’s board of directors.

“In 2018, 12 students passed their provisional licenses when the school started. After COVID-19, we are resurrecting the dream. For this purpose, a certified driving school instructor and University graduate was hired. The dream of the school is to produce a student who is ready to enter the higher education phase with a valid driving license. Approved plans for the driving school are available and so is the ground for practical lessons. Students will receive practical lessons on the small technical problems drivers face, such as oil checks, filling tire pressure, removing and replacing wheels in case of a puncture.

“The driving school is part of the founder’s vision – to witness Nyatsime College providing technical, vocational and trade education not provided in African schools, to equip African children with life skills. Our total budget for the entire project is US$129,151.95. The Golf Day Invitational Fundraiser will not be exhaustive in funding all our events, but will complement the ongoing work – this opportunity will allow them to commit to sponsoring specific project activities,” Maisvoreva added.

Nyatsime College was founded on 11 August 1960 by the late Professor Stanlake Samkange, who was a man of many talents: teacher, educator, historian, journalist, novelist, church patron and business director.

As an educationalist, he founded Nyatsime College to provide the underprivileged black majority with a commercial, economic and vocational education that during the colonial period had been reserved for privileged first- and second-class citizens.

The College was a do-it-yourself project inspired by Booker T. Washington’s book “Up from Slavery” while he was at Adams College in South Africa.

The founding of Nyatsime College was the first venture of an African.

The format is betterball stableford and registration costs US$50 for one person and US$200 for a 4-Ball.
