Police approve second minority protest against Governor and BoG deputies

The Ghana Police Service has granted approval to the minority group in Parliament to hold a second protest on July 30, demanding the dismissal of Dr Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), along with his two deputies.

This approval comes after successful discussions between the police and Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga.

In a letter dated July 17, police ordered organizers to ensure that the demonstration remained peaceful and did not disrupt public order.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs say Dr Addison, who they accuse of major mismanagement at the Central Bank, should be replaced by a more competent person.

Previously, on October 3, 2023, the minority bloc held a protest calling for the resignation of the governor and his deputies.

This protest followed the Bank of Ghana’s report of a loss of GH¢60.81 billion for the 2022 fiscal year and the allocation of over $250 million to build a new headquarters.

Protesters began at Obra Spot on Kwame Nkrumah Circle and marched through key locations including Adabraka, Ridge Roundabout and the traffic lights at the High Court Complex, culminating in Independence Square.

Despite their intention to present a petition to the governor, he did not receive them personally, delegating the matter to his head of security.

The initial protest was deemed unsuccessful, prompting the minority group to plan a new date for the demonstration, which took almost a year to materialize.

During this period, MP Mahama Ayariga filed a Right to Information (RTI) request to the BoG, seeking detailed information on the combined losses of about GH¢70 billion reported in the Bank’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023, as well as the over GH¢250 million spent on the new headquarters and a clinic under construction.

The central bank responded that this information was already publicly available.
