One dead after explosion and fire at downtown Calgary nursing home

One person has died after a fire broke out following an explosion at a seniors home in downtown Calgary.

Emergency crews were called to the home in East Village on 6 Street SE near 9 Avenue SE around 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Firefighters told CityNews they received reports of an explosion on the upper floor of the residence.

Crews found black smoke coming from a fourth-floor window when they arrived and were able to bring the fire under control.

Calgary Police confirm one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no information on other injuries.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the explosion.
