Victoria hit by strong winds overnight, more expected over the weekend

Victoria has been hit by strong winds overnight and severe weather warnings have been issued for the south-east of the state.

Damaging winds reached speeds of up to 100 km/h overnight, uprooting trees and blocking roads.

SES crews responded to more than 100 calls for help overnight, 70 of which came from the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Mount William recorded record wind gusts of 93 km/h overnight, while winds at Falls Creek reached 95 km/h.

Severe weather warnings remain in effect for the Gippsland and Grampians region as a cold front and low pressure system move across the state.

Gale force wind warnings have been issued for Port Phillip, Western Port, West Coast, Central Coast, Central Gippsland Coast and East Gippsland Coast on Saturday.

The BoM also warned that strong winds will hit the Gippsland Lakes area on Saturday.

Damaging winds are also expected in parts of the Central, East Gippsland, South West, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and Wimmera forecast districts.

On the east coast of Gippsland, the Alps and the Grampians, strong south-westerly winds will average 60 to 70 km/h, with gusts reaching 100 km/h.

Windy conditions are expected to last into the evening.

Blizzard conditions are also expected in alpine areas.

The cold front will also bring abnormally high tides, and coastal hazard warnings have been issued for parts of the East Gippsland and West and South Gippsland districts.

The winds are expected to continue into Sunday and gale-force wind warnings have been issued for the east coast of Gippsland.

Strong winds will affect the West Coast, Central Coast and Central Gippsland Coast.
