State Highway 1 through the Brynderwyn Hills between Kaiwaka and Waipū has been closed after heavy rain caused some landslides on the road.

However, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) had hoped it would reopen at 3pm on Saturday.

The route was Northland’s main connection to the rest of the country and reopened in June after a four-month closure due to earlier traffic jams.

Mark Ware, NZTA’s project manager for Northland recovery, said heavy rain overnight had caused the landslides.

There was earth-moving machinery at the site, he said.

Nearly 100,000 tonnes of earth have been moved so far as repair work continues on State Highway 1 above Brynderwyns.

The route was recently opened after being closed for several months. (File photo)

A detour for cars and other light vehicles had been established via Nova Scotia Drive, Cove Road, Garbolino Road and Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Road.

In an earlier statement, NZTA said that because it was a “significant detour”, the bypass was not suitable for trucks – they needed to detour via State Highway 12 and SH14 instead.

“We have been advised by our council partners that Paparoa Oakley Road is not suitable for freight at this time due to significant underground slippage on the road.”

NZTA will continue to monitor routes and provide updates.

Drivers are advised to check weather and road conditions before travelling.
