Fort Portal, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Council for Higher Education- NCHE has accredited FINS Medical University to offer new Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Pharmacy courses.

According to a letter dated July 12, signed by Professor Mary Okwakol, Executive Director of NCHE, and sent to the Vice-Chancellor of the Medical University of Finland, the council accredited the programme during its 76th session according to minutes 607/76/2024.

The programme was accredited for a period of eleven years starting in the 2024/2025 academic year.

According to the letter, the university will only be allowed to admit 50 students per academic year for the program.

Victor Kalenzi, director of FINS Medical University, told this reporter that the accreditation of the program is a major milestone for the institution in addressing the challenge of the shortage of critical health professionals in the country.

He added that the new programme will benefit students from Tooro sub-region to achieve their dreams without travelling long distances.

The Fort Portal-based medical institution started in 2010 as a training institution for nurses and midwives; however, in 2018, it was granted a university license and later renamed Fins Medical University.
