Ethiopia: Prime Minister Abiy calls on everyone to continue being part of the Green Legacy initiative

Addis Ababa — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed urged everyone to continue to be part of this year’s Green Legacy Initiative.

Minister for PIME Abiy Ahmed and Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh joined staff members from the Prime Minister’s Office to plant indigenous GreenLegacy seedlings within the Chaka complex.

The process of uprooting eucalyptus trees and replacing them with indigenous varieties has continued, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Ethiopians across the country are planting trees under the motto: “A nation that plants, a generation that sustains.”

The country has planned to plant 7.5 billion saplings during this rainy season as part of the Green Legacy Initiative campaign that has been carried out across the country for the past five years.

The target for this year is to reach 40 billion seedlings out of the overall target of 50 billion. Ethiopia has so far planted more than 32.5 thousand tree seedlings.

Prime Minister Abiy urged everyone to continue to be part of this year’s Green Legacy Initiative.

The initiative is already bearing fruit: Ethiopia’s forest cover increased from 17.2 percent in 2019 to 23.6 percent in 2023.
