Toronto – An attack in Ameya district, southwest of Shoa, Oromia region in Ethiopia left 12 civilians dead, VOA Amharic reported in a press report published on Friday.

District authorities in the area have informed the source that there are also civilians injured and that they link the attack to “extremist gunmen from Fano”. Material damage has also been reported, but its extent has not been specified.

VOA Amharic authority Driba Bericha said he had lost nine members of his family, including his parents, as a result of the attack. He said they carried out the attacks because “we asked them to disarm.”

“As a result of the attack that occurred on Monday in our district, we have confirmed that 12 people were killed and four others were injured,” Getachew Olana, head of Ameya district, confirmed to VOA Amharic reporter Gelmo Dawit. The attack occurred in the afternoon in the district’s Tigi village. The area is said to be adjacent to the Gurage area.

“Those who escaped from our district and hid in Abeshege district, Hudanda area, extremist forces from Fano are carrying out similar attacks against our residents,” Getachew said, as quoted by Gelemo Dawit.

The dead are said to be buried while the injured will be hospitalized.

Residents of the district say normality has not yet been restored in the area. However, the district chief said “relative peace” has been restored following the deployment of government forces.

Authorities also said a joint investigation between the district and the Gurage area is underway, and it will be possible to specify the number of people arrested once it is completed, Getachew added.

Kebele authorities have implicated unspecified perpetrators in similar attacks in the past.

Fano forces have not released any updates on military operations in Ameya this week. Local news reports this week indicate that Fano forces are busy fighting government forces in different parts of Ethiopia’s Amhara region.
