Toronto – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance announced on Thursday that it has signed a US$86.18 billion funding agreement with UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Semereta Sewasew, Minister of State Finance of Ethiopia, Mariko Kagoshima, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Ethiopia, and Taiwo Oluyomi, Deputy Representative of UNFPA in Ethiopia, signed the agreement in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

The fund is intended to finance the operations of the organizations to “implement the agencies’ ongoing country program in Ethiopian fiscal year 2017 (GC 2024/25).”

Most of the funding comes from UNICEF, which allocates $70 million to finance the implementation of development programmes, focusing on projects related to water, nutrition, education, health, sanitation, child protection and gender equality, according to the Ministry of Finance’s news update.

UNFPA is spending the remaining portion of the agreement on programmes related to family planning, maternal health, adolescent and youth development, gender equality and women’s empowerment projects.

It is also indicated that the agencies will be implementing the final phase of the current programs in the country.
