Ministry of Education waives fees for freshmen placed by KUCCPS

The Ministry of Education has waived fees for first-year students placed in universities by KUCCPS.

In a statement dated July 19, Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala said the new structure will be issued from August 5.

Inyangala advised parents to ignore previous communications from institutions.

“The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the public, particularly parents and guardians of students, that the fees payable by students and their families in relation to the total cost of each degree programme, as previously communicated in admission letters, are hereby waived and no longer applicable,” Inyangala said.

“Starting August 5, the respective universities will announce the new amounts that each student must pay as a family contribution,” he said.

However, the Ministry said the placement of students in the respective academic programs remains unchanged.

“We want to confirm that your places in the academic programs are firmly secured.”

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has placed the 2023 cohort of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) students into various degree programmes and the information communicated to the students by the respective universities.

This comes amid concerns that thousands of students due to start at universities in September could lose government funding.

Inyang’ala on Thursday told MPs that they cannot offer loans or scholarships to candidates for the 2023 KCSE examination who have already been placed in various universities.

Some 153,292 students are expected to enroll at the university.
