The appointment of a deputy inspector general does not imply a duplication of functions of the inspector general – Benjamin Agordzo

Retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, Benjamin Agordzo, has backed the appointment of Police Officer Christian Tetteh Yohuno as Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP).

On 17 July, President Akufo-Addo appointed COP Yohuno as Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations.

Critics have raised concerns about the timing of the appointment, suggesting it could trigger further changes in the police hierarchy.

However, speaking with News of joy On July 19, the former police officer said there was nothing wrong with the president’s appointment.

He argued that COP Yohuno would play a different role and take pressure off the IGP.

“There is no duplication here. It does not mean that Mr. Yohuno will accept the position of Chief Operating Officer, no. But it does expand his supervisory role.”

“When I was Director General of Administration, I was doing routine work, routine work of signing documents and giving directives usually through the Inspector General of Police. But those departments did not report directly to him. Which means that the Inspector General of Police may be doing too much and therefore when he is not there, it becomes a challenge. Therefore, this time the Inspector General of Police might feel a little bit relieved and his work could be much more effective,” he added.

He said this role is not new and will help reduce the current workload of the IGP.

Responding to claims that this could be linked to the leaked IGP tapes saga, ACP Agordzo said the two have nothing in common.

He argued that the President has the authority to appoint and remove officials and that the President was only doing his duty.

ACP Agordzo advised people to desist from reading too much into some of these appointments.
