Nyamira Governor Nyaribo calls on youth to dialogue as counterpart Ole Lenku condemns county protests

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has called on young people in Nyamira to engage in dialogue following Tuesday’s Occupy County protests.

Speaking in Sironga where he had visited to inspect the progress of the ongoing construction of the Nyamira Industrial Park, Nyaribo called on the youths to join him next Wednesday at the Uhuru Gardens in Nyamira town for an engagement to resolve the ongoing protests against his administration.

The thousands of youth who demonstrated in front of the county headquarters want the county government to address issues such as high wage bills, lack of development, unemployment and stalled projects.

The youth have planned another round of “Occupy County” demonstrations for Tuesday.

Elsewhere in Kajiado, Governor Joseph Ole Lenku condemned the widespread violence and looting witnessed during anti-government protests in the county.

Speaking at his county residence, Ole Lenku stressed that the county leadership and security team will act decisively to prevent such violence in the future.

He further expressed concern that such incidents could disrupt inter-community relations and hamper the county’s development agenda.

Ole Lenku later called for dialogue to heal the country following protests that escalated into violence, resulting in deaths and loss of property.

The villages of Ong’ata Rongai and Kitengela in Kajiado have been the worst hit by the protests, with reports of between 3 and 5 deaths, multiple gunshot wounds and material damage estimated in the millions.
