Jack Ginnivan drops f-bomb in post-match interview, ‘goodnight’ celebration in front of Pies fans, Hawthorn Hawks defeat Collingwood Magpies, commentary, latest news

Hawthorn star Jack Ginnivan let loose a couple of expletives in an emotional post-match interview after criticising his former team at the MCG.

On Saturday, the Hawks recorded their seventh win in eight games, defeating Collingwood by 66 points in a convincing performance.

Collingwood’s 2023 Championship Player of the Year, Ginnivan was instrumental in Hawthorn’s winning cause, tallying a career-best 31 disposals, 11 scoring involvements and two goals.

After the match, Fox Footy’s Cameron Mooney asked Ginnivan to describe his emotions after beating his former teammates, and he was completely candid.

“Yeah, damn, that’s a great start!” Ginnivan told Mooney with a laugh on Fox Footy.

“Yeah, look, these (Collingwood players) are my flag friends (for 2023) and I have a lot of respect for them. I love these lads and I hope they do well, but wow, what a win.

“To be honest, I’m very proud of everyone. All our forwards, defenders, everyone. We’re very young and everyone can see that, and I loved the play of Wizard (Nick Watson), of our young guys. I’m very proud.”

Ginnivan described his blossoming bond with his fellow forwards.

“Me, ‘Wizard’, Finn (Maginness) and ‘Crock’ (Macdonald) are all in the locker room together so we’re always criticising each other,” he said.

“We love each other, we love this club, and how can you not love it when you’ve won eight or nine games in a row or something like that? It’s been very good.”

“We have too many (handshakes), too many. We all have something in common, we have Connor (Macdonald) playing a bit of brass, and that’s why I love this club, because you can be yourself and get on with it.”

In the fourth quarter, Ginnivan made “goodnight” gestures to disgruntled Magpies fans, and Mooney grilled the young forward about the taunt.

“That (was my favorite celebration), saying goodnight to the Pies, but I love the Hawks fans, that’s what helps me play, the adrenaline kicks in, and without these fans we don’t do what we do, so thank you so much,” he said.

Mooney jokingly suggested Ginnivan create a special handshake with Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall.

“I used to watch him on Bounce when I was 12, so I love the Boss. He can probably help me with some set-up shots, so Boss, come on down,” he said with a smile.

Dunstall couldn’t help but acknowledge the generation gap, highlighting the “different breed” of today’s youth.

“They are a different breed, the younger generation,” he said. “They play for the thrill of it, they love it. They love everything that goes with it.”

“It’s interesting you mention that because he (coach Sam Mitchell) has always had a strong connection with the older players because Mitch has been out of the game for a long time and he knows them very, very well, but he’s had to embrace this new generation of youngsters coming through.

He probably doesn’t understand it, because he’s half a generation older than them, but these young people and the world of social media are a very different breed.

“Everything they do, the way they celebrate, the way they behave, it’s all part of the way they like to play the game.”
