Multi-state listeria outbreak linked to sliced ​​deli meats leaves 2 dead, 28 hospitalized in US

A multistate Listeria outbreak linked to sliced ​​deli meats has claimed the lives of two people, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an advisory issued Friday. The agency said in a research note that the outbreak has led to 28 hospitalizations in 12 states.

The agency said most people infected with the potentially deadly bacteria reported eating meats sliced ​​from deli counters. As part of its ongoing investigation, the CDC is gathering data needed to “determine the specific products that may be contaminated.”

The CDC also noted that products sliced ​​or prepared in deli establishments are more susceptible to Listeria contamination, as the bacteria spreads easily from hands and surfaces to deli equipment and food. The agency explained that Listeria cannot be killed by refrigeration, adding that before eating, foods should be heated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot to kill germs.

“Listeria is especially harmful if you are pregnant, age 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system due to certain medical conditions or treatments. Other people can become infected with listeria, but they rarely become seriously ill,” the CDC statement added. Twelve states have been affected by the outbreak, with the highest number of sick people in New York.

  10. New York – 7 people sick
  11. New Jersey – 2 people sick
  12. Massachusetts – 2 people sick
