Shabana Azmi praises Halo for colorblind casting

In an interview with Variety, Shabana praised the show’s casting, saying, “Asian actors have been saying that they’ve really struggled to get a non-white cast, because they were saying why should Caucasians be recognized as mainstream,” Azmi asked. “And if Laurence Olivier can play Othello, why can’t an Asian actor do it? And now when I’m doing ‘Halo,’ I realize that they’ve really gotten a non-white cast, because even though I’m playing Margaret Parangosky, they haven’t asked me to change my accent, my eye color is exactly the same, they haven’t dyed my hair.”

About Halo

Pablo Schreiber portrayed the iconic character Master Chief John-117, a genetically enhanced super soldier and part of an elite group known as the Spartans, in Halo. The series also starred Shabana Azmi as Admiral Margaret Parangosky. The cast included names such as Natascha McElhone, Jen Taylor, Bokeem Woodbine, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, and Danny Sapani.

In 2005, the concept for Halo initially began as a film starring Neill Blomkamp. However, after several years of development, it premiered as a show on Paramount+ in 2022. Set in the 26th century, Halo revolves around the conflict between humanity and an alien group called the Covenant.

The series also has the backing of Steven Spielberg, owner of Amblin TV.
