If you become president, prioritize public welfare over judicial processes: Kwesi Pratt Jr. urges Mahama

The Editor-in-Chief of Insight newspaper has advised National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant John Mahama to prioritise improving the living conditions of Ghanaians if he becomes president.

Kwesi Pratt Jr. said the former president should focus on that rather than prosecuting those appointed by the Akufo-Addo government.

“In any case, what the people of Ghana deserve most is for their new government to work hard to improve their access to health, education, nutrition and transport. That is what we need.

“What is the point of putting people in jail if we are not able to meet the needs of the people? The most important task of the incoming government should be to make life more bearable for our people.

“That is the hallmark and the way the new administration will be judged,” he said at the 12th anniversary lecture by Professor John Evans Atta Mills.

Mr Pratt stressed that Mahama would face challenges from the judiciary and other public institutions that could hamper the prosecution process.

“It may be useful to warn the incoming Mahama administration that it will not find it easy to prosecute wrongdoers under the Akufo-Addo administration. It is not going to be an easy task and it is not going to happen.

“We will have to confront the judiciary and other factors and institutions that will hinder this effort,” he said.

Mr. Pratt spoke as a guest speaker at the 12th Anniversary of the Atta Mills Memorial Lecture held at the University of Ghana on Friday, 19 July 2024.

The event was attended by notable personalities including Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, former President John Dramani Mahama, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and other dignitaries.
