Man fatally struck by vehicle in Bowmanville, driver charged

A suspected drunk driver is facing charges following a collision in Bowmanville in which a man was struck and killed while walking with his family, the Durham Regional Police Service said.

Authorities were notified of a collision on Simpson Avenue near Liberty Street South and Baseline Road around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police told CityNews that the driver of one vehicle crashed into another vehicle and then struck a family who was walking in the area.

A man was pronounced dead in hospital. A woman suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while a baby was unharmed.

A male driver is in custody and faces multiple charges, including operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

The investigation is ongoing.
