Top 10 African countries where citizens would not accept a coup to overthrow bad leaders

In 39 African countries, 42% say the military should never intervene in politics.

Most Africans would accept a military coup if elected leaders abused power, a survey of 39 countries by Afrobarometer has shown.

According to the report, titled African Outlook 2024 Democracy at risk: the people’s perspective toThere is notable variation in how African countries reject military rule: some are strongly opposed while others are less resolute.

Zambia tops the list with 90% of its population rejecting the idea of military rule, closely followed by Uganda (87%), Eswatini (85%) and Seychelles (85%).

In 39 countries, 53% are willing to accept the military taking control of government “when elected leaders abuse power for their own ends,” while a minority of 42% say the military should never intervene in politics.

It is noteworthy that although young Africans differ little from their elders in their support for democracy, they express a greater willingness to tolerate military intervention.

These attitudes toward military rule suggest that a combination of trust in the military, frustration with poor governance, and weakened (or nonexistent) memories of the harsh realities experienced during a previous era of military rule may be undermining resistance to this particular form of authoritarian rule.
