Apply for remote positions, Ummy advises professionals

GIVE ES SALAAM – Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu has urged Tanzanian health professionals to take up positions in the country’s peripheral regions in a bid to help address the severe shortage of professionals in those areas.

According to the Minister, the plan will reduce shortages by 50 percent by improving the provision of health services in numerous health centres, dispensaries and some district hospitals.

Speaking at a memorial symposium for the late President Benjamin Mkapa at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam on July 29, 2024, Minister Ummy assured health workers that they should not fear working in remote areas.

He stressed that essential social services such as electricity, roads, water and schools are available in the regions.

The symposium, which focuses on human resources in the health sector, will look at the training of health professionals in the country, their quality and strategies to ensure that they remain in their assigned areas to serve the public. Minister Ummy highlighted the significant contributions of the late President Mkapa to the health sector, including the establishment of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) in 2000.

The event brings together diverse stakeholders from the health sector to discuss and provide inputs for the upcoming Sixth National Health Sector Strategic Plan (2026-2031), in line with the country’s Vision 2050. The symposium is expected to be officially opened by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on 30 July 2024.
