National Weather Service issues flood warning for Virginia counties

At 11 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro.

WHAT: The flood warning is in effect from 3pm Thursday until this evening. There is a risk of flash flooding due to extreme rainfall.

WHERE: Parts of Virginia, including the following areas: Albemarle, Augusta, Central Virginia Blue Ridge, Central and Southeast Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park, Clarke, Culpeper, East Loudoun, Frederick VA, Greene, Madison, North Fauquier, Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, Northwest Prince William, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, South Fauquier, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Warren and West Loudoun and panhandle West Virginia, including the following areas: Berkeley and Jefferson.

CONSEQUENCES: Excessive runoff may cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Widespread thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms are capable of producing very heavy rainfall, with local rainfall amounts of two to four inches possible in a one to two hour period. This may result in flash flooding of small streams and creeks, as well as urban and poorly drained areas. Visit www.weather.gov/safety/flood for flood safety and preparedness information.
