3 areas in the Atlantic Ocean are being monitored for possible tropical development

MIAMI – The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring a few disturbances that could potentially reach tropical proportions, but it is the disturbance located a few hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean that meteorologists are primarily focused on.

According to the NHC, the disturbance is located east of the Caribbean and associated showers and thunderstorms continue to show signs of organization.

“By late next week, this system could be over extremely warm waters and favorable atmospheric conditions to strengthen in the western Caribbean,” FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross said. “But it needs to get organized first, so no reliable forecasts are possible.”

According to the NHC, the chance of the storm developing tropically in the coming week is between 40 and 50 percent. Norcross expects that percentage to remain there until the system shows better signs of organization.

“Many long-range forecasts show the system veering north toward the Gulf (of Mexico) next weekend, but that’s far enough away that we can’t pay attention to specific forecasts,” Norcross said. “At this point, just be aware of a potential storm threat near Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula next weekend, and to the Southeast the following week.”

Unrest will move from Africa to elsewhere

According to the NHC, the disturbance off the coast of Africa has disappeared and is no longer being monitored. However, a new threat could soon emerge in the area.

According to the NHC, a tropical storm moving across West Africa is expected to move from land to sea on Monday. Weather conditions could allow for slow development over the coming week as the storm moves slowly west or west-northwest across the eastern tropical Atlantic.

Gulf Coast disruption leaves development opportunities slim, but flood risk remains

A trough of low pressure currently causing a large but disorganized area of thunderstorms along and just offshore of the Texas And Louisiana coasts are still attached to a low probability of tropical development, the NHC said.

With little wind to steer the system, storms are expected to meander along the coast throughout next week. But some slow tropical development is possible if the system remains offshore over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the NHC said.

NEW DISTURBANCE IN GULF OF MEXICO BEING MONITORED FOR POSSIBLE TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT

At this time, the NHC is giving only a low chance of development into at least a tropical depression within the next week. The agency warned that regardless of tropical development, heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding along parts of the Louisiana and upper Texas coast in the coming days.
