Interview with ‘The Perfect Storm’ on ABC’s 20/20

Controversial true crime character Karen Read isn’t done capturing the public’s attention, despite the fact that the trial of the Massachusetts woman accused of murdering her police officer boyfriend John O’Keefe ended in July with the jury unable to reach a verdict.

ABC’s 20/20 will air a special segment on Friday about the frenetic events, titled “Karen Read: The Perfect Storm.” In this segment, the 20/20 team will attempt to make sense of the chaos, confusion and controversy surrounding the case and the sensational trial.

The trailer for the hour-long segment features “rare” interviews with Read herself, some of which took place just before the trial, as well as with O’Keefe’s family and friends. The trailer promises “an exclusive personal video and Karen Read fully advocating for herself.”

Who is Karen Read?

Read is a 44-year-old Massachusetts woman accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend, 46-year-old O’Keefe, after he was found dead in the snow on a co-worker’s lawn on the morning of January 29, 2022.

In a trial that captured the nation’s attention, prosecutors alleged that Read struck O’Keefe with her car after a night of drinking and then fled. But the defense, led by heavyweight attorney Alan Jackson, argued that Read was a convenient scapegoat in a cover-up orchestrated by local law enforcement in a theory that has gained increasing public support.

After months of testimony, the trial came to a somewhat unsatisfactory conclusion on July 1 of this year when it was decided to throw out the trial because the jury could not reach a verdict.

What is the ABC 20/20 interview about?

According to ABC, the special, “Karen Read: The Perfect Storm,” will feature interviews with Read about various moments during and after the trial.

An ABC story published ahead of the segment said it will include an interview in which 20/20 “catches up” with Read in her hotel room as she prepares for the trial. It will also feature “personal interviews with John O’Keefe’s family and close friends.”

“Karen Read: The Perfect Storm” airs Friday, September 6 at 9 p.m. on ABC’s 20/20. The hour-long segment will air that night on ABC and will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
