Game updates, live score for week 4

play

Heisman Trophy candidate Quinn Ewers is no longer the quarterback for Texas football, and heralded backup Arch Manning is still the starter — at least for one week.

Manning threw two touchdown passes and Jaydon Blue scored twice as Texas (3-0) took an early lead over Louisiana-Monroe late in the first quarter. Follow along live to see how Manning and the Longhorns fare against the Warhawks.

TEXAS 21 0 0 0 21

Arch Manning has shaken off an early interception and thrown for 138 yards and two touchdowns on 8 of 12 passes. ULM’s offense has just 27 yards on 13 snaps, leaving Texas looking like the No. 1 seed in this week’s Associated Press poll.

Arch Manning and freshman receiver Ryan Wingo continue to show their chemistry. Wingo caught two passes for 42 yards on the Longhorns’ most recent scoring drive, including a 17-yard score. Texas scores early and often, and Manning has 138 yards and two TDs on 8 of 12 passing.

Sophomore middle linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. gets his first career interception after dropping back and catching a General Booty pass in the flat. He returns the pass for a touchdown, but a block in the back on Trey Moore nullifies the score. But the interception stands and Arch Manning finds running back Jaydon Blue for a 3-yard TD pass. That’s two touchdowns for Blue.

Arch Manning quickly makes up for his early interception with a beautiful 56-yard bomb to Isaiah Bond, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Jaydon Blue for his first rushing TD of the season.

Maybe the redshirt sophomore quarterback is human after all. A week after throwing for 223 yards and four TDs on 9 of 12 passing, Arch Manning threw his first career interception. It was an ill-advised throw to Matthew Golden in double coverage, and ULM defensive back Carl Fauntroy was more than eager to capitalize on the mistake.

After missing last week’s win over UTSA with an ankle injury, running back Jaydon Blue returns to the starting lineup. The junior from the Houston suburb of Klein has 79 yards on 20 carries and 74 yards and a touchdown on nine receptions this season.

As expected, starting quarterback Quinn Ewers has been officially ruled out for today’s game by Texas officials. But safety Derek Williams Jr. will also miss the game with a hamstring injury, which is a surprise considering the 6-foot-2, 195-pound sophomore wasn’t mentioned when Texas coach Steve Sarkisian discussed injuries this week. Williams has rotated into free safety Michael Taaffe all season and has seven tackles and an interception.

Running backs Jaydon Blue and Quintrevion Wisner, who were listed as “day-to-day” by Sarkisian earlier this week, are warming up.

ULM quarterback General Booty has helped bring much-needed stability to a Warhawk offense that struggled under former coach Terry Bowden. From 2020-23, the Warhawks never averaged more than 22.3 points and twice fell below the 20-point mark. Things look different now. ULM scored 30 points in a season-opening win over Football Championship Series opponent Jackson State, then crushed Trent Dilfer’s UAB team 32-6 in Week 2. The Warhawks have done that by keeping it simple for Booty, who transferred from Oklahoma in the offseason after not throwing a pass in two seasons as a Sooner.

DEFENSE REMAINS DOMINANCE

Watch some film and the Warhawks’ effort jumps off the screen. But so does a lack of playmaking at receiver and in the secondary, which doesn’t bode well for the Longhorns.

ARCH SUPPORT

No Quinn, no problem. Even without QB1, the Longhorns are still the best team in the country. Arch Manning won’t be asked to overachieve because he has a great supporting cast. The Horns will score another defensive touchdown and enter SEC play with a ton of momentum.

SEC WAIT – THANFKULLY

The Longhorns haven’t been challenged much in non-conference play and that won’t change this week against ULM. Expect Texas to put this game away in the first half and then the countdown to the start of SEC play can begin.

WINNING IS UGLY, SORT OF

Regularly one of the worst programs in the FBS, ULM looks to step up a level this season under new coach Bryant Vincent, coming off a resounding Week 2 win over a UAB team he used to coach. Still, this isn’t a Group of Five program at a point where it can hope to compete with the talent of Texas. This is going to get ugly.
