Brentford remains painfully 16 seconds behind the unique Premier League record

Brentford’s incredible scoring run continued early on as Nathan Collins headed his side into a second-minute lead against Wolves.

But the defender’s effort came 16 seconds too late as the Bees came close to making Premier League history at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Prior to Saturday’s 3pm kick-off, Brentford had scored within a minute in their last three Premier League appearances against Manchester City, Tottenham and West Ham.

The West Londoners became the first Premier League team to find the back of the net within 60 seconds in three consecutive matches.

And if he did that for the fourth time, Thomas Frank’s team would have been the first to score four times within one minute in one season.

But they fell just short of making history after Collins met Mikkel Damsdaard’s cross to go past Sam Johnstone.

It came just 16 seconds into the second minute.

Brentford’s early antics in recent matches have proven to be a bad omen, with the club failing to maintain their lead, resulting in two defeats and one draw.

And Brentford fans would have feared the worst two minutes later when Matheus Cunha equalized for the hosts in a chaotic six-goal first half.

But the hosts regained the lead in the 20th minute through Bryan Mbuemo’s penalty.

It was the 25-year-old’s sixth Premier League goal of the season – just three behind the nine he scored last season.

Wolves refused to go away and equalized again moments later, with Jorgen Strand Larsen firing low into the bottom right corner.

However, just two minutes later Brentford scored again, this time through Christian Norgaard, who fired an effort into the bottom corner.

The drama was not over yet, as Ethan Pinnock made it 4-2 in extra time.

talkSPORT reporter Lewis Mason put it perfectly, saying live from Gtech Community Stadium: “This game is mental!”

A win for Brentford would take them into the top half of the table.

But a defeat for Wolves would leave them bottom of the table.

They are yet to win and have collected just one point from their first six matches.
