When to Look for the Brightest Moon of the Year Over Los Angeles – NBC Los Angeles

Early risers will have the best view of the brightest moon of the year when it shines over Southern California this week.

October’s long-awaited supermoon, also known as the Hunter’s Moon, will be at a distance of 360,055 kilometers from Earth, its closest position in 2024.

The moon will appear on the horizon just before 6:00 PM PT on Wednesday. The best time to see the spectacular glow is around 4:26 a.m. PT on Thursday, depending on cloud cover.

A deep marine layer could obstruct the moon early Thursday.

“We have an even deeper marine layer,” said NBCLA forecaster Belen De Leon. “It will be cloudy for everyone.”

This will be the third of four consecutive supermoons. Since it is the full moon after the Harvest Moon in September, this will be the Hunter’s Moon.

The earliest written use of the term “Hunter’s Moon,” identified in the Oxford English Dictionary, dates back to 1710, according to NASA. The Farmer’s Almanac notes that with falling leaves, fattened animals and harvested fields, autumn is the time for hunting.

A supermoon typically appears larger and brighter than a standard full moon. This full moon may appear larger and take on an orange hue as it floats over the horizon around sunset.
