IHSA 2024 volleyball playoff schedule, results for Springfield

The Taylorville volleyball team treats the regular season as one big workout for the postseason, and the time has finally come.

The Tornadoes announce another high-powered lineup ahead of the Class 3A playoffs, with a group of seniors dating back to the first grade.

That includes 6-4 hitter Mazie Fleming and 5-8 setter Sami Breckenridge.

Fleming recently committed to NCAA Division II University of Illinois Springfield. Fleming, also a standout basketball player, said she went the other way because she enjoys the intensity and camaraderie that comes with volleyball.

“I’m super excited and I think it’s a great fit for me,” Fleming said.

Fleming said she has improved in all facets of the game over the past four years under head coach Kim Peabody, especially in blocking. She was strictly a middle hitter before injuries on the team led her to become an outside hitter last season. She can now handle both positions.

“We block a lot at practices,” Fleming said. “Coach Peabody likes to really get into it because it’s a really big part of the game. It’s a lot easier for our passers to get those hard hits when we get a touch on them.”

Indeed, Fleming led the team in kills (156) and blocks (43) prior to the weekend.

Breckenridge has a wealth of other options with four other players with at least 90 kills, including juniors Alayna Vincent (149) and Ella Appel (116) and seniors Liv Havera (102) and Lia Champley (92). That doesn’t include junior Robyn Ward, who was injured early in the season.

“I have a lot of confidence in my hitters,” Breckenridge said. “When I set them up, I have the mentality that they’re going to put the ball down and they’re going to be smart with it. Even if it’s not a really good set, they’re going to do something with the ball that will make a change. ”

Breckenridge has emerged as an assertive leader over the past two seasons as he posted 562 assists and 192 digs this fall. Until about a month ago she also did gymnastics, mainly trampoline and tumbling.

She has represented USA Gymnastics abroad for the past three years in England (2023), Bulgaria (2022) and Azerbaijan (2021). Breckenridge said she first tried gymnastics when she was 3.

“My mom (Josi) put me in this because I was really shy and she hoped it would open me up a little bit,” Breckenridge said. “It didn’t really help with my shyness, but I was just a natural at it and did really well.”

Maybe not at first, but over time it cultivated Breckenridge into the proverbial quarterback she is today. She plans to resume volleyball in college.

“I feel like this is a really big opportunity for you and it really changed the person I am today,” Breckenridge said of her time with Team USA. “It has made me more responsible. And because I would go without my parents and be a leader for younger people, I think that helped me become a leader in volleyball.”

Fleming and Breckenridge certainly share a history of success together that extends to their teammates as well.

In fact, they finished 18-0 in eighth grade. Although the Illinois Elementary School Association state finals were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic that year, Fleming was a key contributor to Taylorville’s first-ever run to the Illinois High School Association state finals in 2022.

“I’m very grateful to have her as my setter,” Fleming said of Breckenridge. “She is really talented and knows where to put the ball. She has great timing and I am very grateful that she is my full-time setter again for a second year. And the friendship we have since playing together for so long makes the connection just so much better.”
