Seth Meyers on Donald Trump’s MSG Rally: Watch ‘A Closer Look’

Donald Trump’s Oct. 27 campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City was the focus of Seth Meyers’ “A Closer Look” segment on Monday. The Late evening Host opened his segment by describing the “immediate response” to racist comments made by a stand-up comedian who spoke at the meeting (the evening’s events are summarized here by NBC News).

How to watch

Watch Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC weeknights at 12:35/11:35 and the next day on Peacock.

Meyers said he felt the tone of the evening did not match what Trump and campaign representatives like his son, Eric Trump, called it. “You may have heard Kamala Harris and Tim Walz say they are running a campaign of optimism and joy,” he began. “Well, Donald Trump wants you to know that he is too.”

The Late evening The host quickly played a clip from Trump’s stump speech that evening, in which the former president continued his habit of comparing his criminal charges to those of gangster Al Capone. “And then I get in there and they come after me,” Trump said, apparently referring to the officials involved in his multiple indictments. “These animals, these dirty animals. I lead a movement of optimism, confidence and hope,” Trump continued.

“That has to be one of the worst phases in the history of politics,” Meyers joked. “Normally, when you shift that hard, you leave your transmission in the middle of the road.”

Seth Meyers recaps Elon Musk and Hulk Hogan’s Trump appearances

After sharing a montage of Eric Trump’s claims in several TV appearances that his father’s campaign is “a movement of total love,” Meyers again pointed out that “both campaigns are trying to lift the mantle of love and joy to demand’.

“And on the one hand you have Kamala Harris campaigning with Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen and Barack Obama in front of record crowds,” he said. “(Democratic vice presidential candidate) Tim Walz did a Twitch stream with AOC where they talked politics while they played Crazy before Walz showed AOC an old Sega game called Crazy taxi.” (This led to Meyers admitting that he himself had played a video game or two at work.)

“So that’s a glimpse of the Democrat version of joy and optimism,” Meyers said. “Let’s take a look at all the hopeful and optimistic guests lining up for Trump’s big rally at Madison Square Garden,” he added, referring to images of billionaire Elon Musk. , wrestler Hulk Hogan, and the campaign speakers who made inflammatory comments about the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, Latinos, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Harris herself.

“It may not surprise you that these lewd and racist comments have sparked an intense backlash, forcing Republicans and the Trump campaign to step down,” Meyers added, pointing to the convictions of Republican Senator Rick Scott from Florida and a statement from the Trump adviser that the controversial joke “does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”

“Do you know how bad something has to be for the Trump campaign to distance itself from it? Trump won’t even distance himself from Hannibal Lecter,” Meyers joked.
