Garrett Wilson Responds to OBJ Comparisons With Acrobatic TNF Catch

One of Garrett Wilson’s two touchdowns on Thursday night is the leading catch of the year candidate so far.

See if it reminds you of another catch we’ve seen in recent history:

A young receiver from New York going to the boundary for a one-handed touchdown grab while losing his balance… Very Odell Beckham Jr.-esque, right?

Reporters asked Wilson after the game what he thought about that comparison. He responded very modestly:

‘It was different with Odell. And he came down three feet,” Wilson said. ‘The ball would land out of bounds. And it was Odell, man. Odell against the Cowboys… Great to even come up in that conversation.”

A reporter interjected from the scrum and gave some more context to the whole thing, saying, “But Garrett, he lost that game.”

“You know what? Aight!” said Wilson, who seemed to appreciate the feeling that his catch was more meaningful. Funnily enough, Wilson admitted after the game that he wasn’t even sure the catch would hold up after the play was reviewed (as with all scoring plays).

While you could argue about which catch was better, the reporter is right: situationally, Wilson’s grab was more meaningful. It put the Jets ahead of the Houston Texans 14-10. Beckham’s touchdown gave the Giants an 11-point lead after the extra point that they somehow failed to hold, losing 31–28 and falling to 3–8 on the season on the night.

This could be the next big sports debate with no clear correct answer: Wilson or Beckham?
