‘There is no place on Twitch for hate,’ says CEO

Twitch, a platform known for its high levels of toxicity and scandals, is no place for hate of any kind, CEO Dan Clancy insists. In a recent blog post discussing updates to the platform’s community guidelines, the somewhat eccentric CEO stated that “Twitch is and always will be about belonging.”

In recent months, Twitch has made several community-led changes to the platform’s guidelines, many of which have been well received by the broader public. However, it’s a drop in the bucket when faced with years of issues, struggles with hate attacks and bot behavior, and questionable content hitting the platform.

‘We work hard’

Dan Clancy was vocal against hate in all forms in a recent blog post on Twitch:

In recent weeks, community members have raised concerns about the way we handle potentially harmful content. There is no place for racism, hatred or harassment of any kind on Twitch, including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

Twitch is and always will be about belonging. Every day, people come together at our service to build communities around shared interests and express themselves authentically. To make this possible, we work hard to ensure our community is a safe place.

He went on to say that some content may seem unacceptable to members of that global community, but regardless, it is allowed on the platform. In recent weeks, Twitch has been in hot water for “allowing” Frogan, an incendiary streamer, to wish death and suffering on soldiers in the US military.

This collaborative Twitch streamer ended up getting a 30-day ban, but for some, that wasn’t even enough.

Twitch has been in a back-and-forth battle for years over what is allowed on the site and what is considered “bannable.” From hot tub streamers to streamers who glorify bullying and hateful behavior, the site has become a toxic cesspool at times.

Clancy is convinced that things are still changing for the better:

We are grateful for the feedback and input from our community. Our security approach continues to evolve and evolve as our service grows. We want to make sure everyone can find their place on Twitch and remain committed to ensuring hate and harassment have no place here.
