Boise State students carry the goalpost into the river in freezing cold after the conference title

After Boise State clinched a spot on the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff field, the goalposts that stood above the blue grass were for the Boise River.

The Broncos defeated UNLV 21-7 on Friday at Albertsons Stadium to win the Mountain West championship and an automatic bid to the CFP as one of the five highest-ranked conference champions. Even though temperatures in Boise, Idaho, were below freezing, the students were on a mission to take down the goalposts and get them into the icy water.

One group of students walked into the river with the stand they were carrying, while another group threw the stand they were holding off a bridge amid much cheering.

A fitting ending for Boise State’s final home game of the season, at 12-1 with a conference title and CFP berth, led by Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty. He rushed for 209 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown run Friday against the Rebels.

Now the Broncos can sit back and see who they will play in the College Football Playoff when the bracket is unveiled Sunday at noon ET on ESPN. They will likely secure a first-round bye before the quarterfinals as one of the four highest-ranked teams out of the five automatic bids.

Until then, we’ll see how far the goalposts will reach the river.
